800’s Regular Kid Outfits – Summary

Dino overalls, safari outfits, and confusion are all part of this 1988 series. Finally straighten out the confusion between these outfits, Designer Line and other outfits.

There are 14 outfits in this series, #804 – #815, as well as two missing outfits, #805 and #813. All of the outfits were made by the KT factory or by Hasbro. Most of them likely came on KT kids. I am unsure if these outfits came with underwear, diapers, or panties. Do you know? Finally, they came with a variety of shoes depending on the outfit, including striped sneakers, ballet flats, saddle shoes, and chunky sneakers.

Most of the outfits in this series came out in 1988 on regular yarn-haired kids, but they can also be found on 1989 dolls. Consequently, they are often confused with Designer Line and Hasbro Poseable Kid outfits. They are also often described as transitional and some are, but many are not. (To learn about what I consider transitional, visit Transitional Period CPK Outfits – A Summary) To add to the confusion, some of these outfits also came on 1989 Growing Hair Kids, but Growing Hair outfits didn’t come on regular kids, and a few of the outfits in this series may have only come out in 1989. Those outfits could technically be considered transitional.

Some of these outfits have both a Coleco and a Hasbro version, for example, #808, and some outfits were only produced by Hasbro, for example, #810. Based on an article from the Dec. 1988 Dolling Around Newsletter, it seems likely that the Hasbro outfits didn’t come out until 1989. So, I guess they are transitional. The article provides a list of the new 1988 outfits, and none of the Hasbro outfits are on the list. In addition, the VHTF Coleco outfits are missing, as I believe they would have thought them to be Growing Hair kid outfits (Ref #4, Dec. 1988, Vol 3, Iss. 1)

As I said, some of these outfits also came on Growing Hair (GH) kids. When they did, they also came with a matching hair accessory. The outfits I have confirmed as coming on GH kids are #808, #809, #811, and #814.

Packaged? Nope

I have no evidence that these outfits ever came packaged. However, being so near the end of Coleco’s run, there may be package lots out there with individual pieces or entire outfits. Not being sold as packaged outfits and having been made for such a short period would also explain why the outfits in this series are generally harder to find.

Popular and Hard-to-find

Outfits #807 and #812 are the most sought-after outfits in this series, with #807 being copied frequently. One collector has gone so far as to hand copy the pattern of the fabric and recreate it so she could make exact replicas. They’re amazing! As for #812, cats.

#805 would be the hardest to find if it exists, but at the moment, I believe that #814 and #809 (Coleco version) hold this title. Given Coleco’s previous history, there’s a good chance #813 was never produced.

#518 – Multi-coloured Jogging Suit

The last of the 500s series outfits, this jogging suit is perfect for enjoying the outdoors or just lounging around the house. Kids can be comfortable anywhere!

Summary of 500s Series outfits and a list of the outfits: The 500s Series

Description

This outfit consists of a cotton shirt and pants. The shirt has a solid colour tank top style section and a second colour for the sleeves and neck. There is an arched Cabbage Patch Kids patch on the chest. The bottom hem of the shirt feels thinner and less ‘finished’ than the other hems.
The pants are in two sections. The top half is a third solid colour and has a sort of ruffle at the bottom. They look a bit like shorts. The remainder of the leg is the same colour as the sleeves.
This outfit came exclusively on dolls designated as being a ‘boy’.
This outfit came with blue striped sneakers.

Coleco started selling this outfit in 1985. It likely ended production no later than sometime in 1986. If it is found later on a kid or in a package, it’s likely because the company was using up old stock.

Version Information

It appears that some of the shirts may have come with more than one pair of overalls. This is a problem because it’s the shirts that have the information tag. This could mean that there’s more than one version of some letters. (FB Conversation, May 2020)

Factory Variations

Although this outfit was produced by at least three different factories, I cannot find any obvious factory variations.

Similar Outfits

#8 – 31 Track Suit: Although it does not look very similar it is very easy to confuse the pants for this outfit with the pants for outfit 518. In some cases, it almost looks like they could be swapped out!

> Fun fact: Prototype versions of this outfit can be found in the 1985 Coleco Catalogue, p. 4 and the JC Penny Christmas Catalogue, p. 4. The blue, grey, and white version was never produced; however, the red, gold, and teal version looks a lot like the PMI outfit! In addition, they have iron-on transfers, not embroidered patches for the logos.

#516 – Multi-coloured Windbreaker Outfit

These babies are ready for a wonderful fall day! Windbreakers, sneakers, and leaves – a great combination!

Description

This outfit consists of a t-shirt, a jacket and pants. The t-shirt is white cotton with an arched Cabbage Patch Kids patch front middle. The pants are pin-striped cotton. The jacket is made of windbreaker material with a zipper at the front. The main jacket is one colour and the inserts across the chest and on the sleeves are two other colours.
This outfit was sold on dolls identified as boys.
This outfit came with blue striped sneakers.

516K OK

It is believed that the outfit did not start being manufactured until 1986, instead of 1985 like most of the others in this series. Consequently, it has a shorter manufacturing time and is harder to find. There’s no known explanation for this. For details, refer back to the summary post. Generally, this outfit came out on kids, but it can also be found packaged. This was likely done during the ‘inventory clean out’ that happened later.

Variations

This outfit was made by the KT and OK factories. I have not recorded one instance where an outfit was made by both factories. I can not see any difference between the outfits made at the KT factory and those made at the OK factory.

#10 Windbreaker Outfit: This is part of the 1983 series and was likely the inspiration for this outfit. The major differences include a sold coloured shirt and jeans, not cotton pants.

#514 – Button Romper

One of the more popular boys outfits, these rompers have such a fun colour scheme, you can help but smile!

Description

This outfit consists of a romper that is either striped (heavy denim) or a solid colour (heavy cotton). The front bib is edged in piping and has six decorative buttons. The shirt is made of three solid-coloured sections: the trunk and each sleeve. This outfit came with either regular lace-up shoes or blue striped sneakers. This outfit came exclusively on ‘boy’ dolls.

Coleco started selling this outfit in 1985. It likely ended production no later than sometime in 1986. We know it was sold later, as it has been found packaged. Packaged Button Romper outfits, and those found on later kids, were likely because the company was using up old stock.

Factory Variations

Only two factories have been recorded producing this outfit, and no factory variations have been noted. Some variation can be seen in the logo patch, but I’m not sure if that’s a factory variation or not.

Similar Outfits

I believe that The Button Romper is most closely related to the original jean romper outfit. However, the button Romper doesn’t come with a hat.

#512 – Ruffled Windbreaker Outfit

Ruffled and frilly, this outfit allows for an outdoor adventure while feeling all dressed up.

Description

This outfit consists of a shirt, a jacket and pants. The shirt’s solid-coloured cotton with an arched Cabbage Patch Kids patch front middle. The pants are a solid colour or slightly striped cotton. A matching ruffle is at the armholes.

Shoes: Solid Form Boots/Sneakers

A sign of the 80’s, these Solid Form Boots/Sneakers are unique to certain CPK outfits. Find out which ones.

I call these shoes Solid Form Boots, but I’ve also heard them called High Top Sneakers as they look a lot like the sneakers that came out in the late 1980s and 90s.

As far as I am aware, these shoes came with some outfits in the Cornsilk 300s series, some transitional outfits, and they came separately packaged.

I know Boots came with Cornsilk outfits #321-324, #326, #328, #332, and #333, but the transitional outfits are more difficult. Transitional outfits came on both Poseable Kids and regular transitional kids. It’s possible that these outfits did not come with a consistent shoe type. At the moment, I know that the outfits below came with Boots, but they may not have come exclusively with Boots. Other options include Ballet Flats, Striped Sneakers, and coloured Mary Janes.

Like most Coleco shoes, Boots have a factory mark. It can be found on the top opening edge. Likely, the boots that came with Cornsilk outfits were only manufactured by the P, KT, and OK factories. Later transitional Boots are likely marked with CHINA or have no mark at all.

#510 – Ruffled Knit Outfit

With only three versions of this outfit produced, it’s difficult to find. Obtaining one with the hat is even more difficult! Learn all about this cute warm and cuddly outfit.

Description

This outfit consists of a top, bottoms, and hat; all of it knit. The top is a striped white and coloured pattern with eyelet lace that runs along the join between sleeve and trunk. There is an arched Cabbage Patch Kids logo patch on the bottom left side. The bottoms are solid coloured pants with ballooned legs with ribbed extra-wide hems. The hat is the same colour as the pants and has a pom-pom on top. This outfit came with regular lace-up shoes.

The colour of the logo patch does not appear to stay consistent across production. For example, both outfits below, 510A, are from the KT factory.

Coleco started selling this outfit in 1985. It likely ended production no later than sometime in 1986. If it is found on later kids, it was likely because the company was using up old stock.

#508 : Tri-Heart Dress

This is a great sporty outfit but the kids are always losing their leg warmers!

Description

This outfit consists of a dress, tights, and leg warmers. The dress has mesh sleeves and neckline. The attached skirt is pleated. The front has a silk-screened Cabbage Patch Kids arched logo above three hearts. I’m not sure which shoes this outfit came with, either pink striped sneakers or regular lace-ups.

Factory Variations

I have only one factory, AX, to compare to the KT outfits. On the AX factory outfit (508B), the hearts appear to be slightly bigger, the skirt is hemmed differently, and it has larger skirt pleats.

#507 – Aerobics Outfit (Updated)

With only four versions of this outfit produced, it’s one of the hardest outfits to find. Obtaining a complete aerobics outfit with all the pieces is even more difficult! Learn all about this interesting outfit.

Description

This outfit consists of numerous pieces.
1) Striped one-piece with footies and long sleeves.
2) Bodysuit with a ruffle on the shoulder straps and a ruffle around the waist. The ruffles are the same striped pattern as piece #1, but the main portion of the bodysuit is a sold colour. This piece has the curved Cabbage Patch Kids logo patch on it.
3) A pair of slouchy leg warmers the opposite colour from the bodysuit.
4) Headband the same colour as the leg warmers (generally).

This outfit came with striped sneakers.

I believe that Coleco started manufacturing this outfit in 1985 because the PMI factory would not have had an opportunity to produce it otherwise. However, many believe the manufacture of this outfit didn’t start until 1986, as kids wearing this outfit are generally found in later boxes. It is a mystery.

Other Information

Scarcity: As it was only made by one factory for most of its manufacture, this outfit is one of the more difficult of the 500s Series to find. It is also the 500s Series outfit with the least number of versions produced. Finally, it is extremely difficult to find an outfit with all the pieces!

#506 – Sun Suit

Fun in the sun! Everyone likes these cute sun suits, so much that they are highly replicated!

Description

This outfit consists of a cotton blouse, cotton romper, and a white terry cloth bucket hat. The blouse has slightly puffed sleeves and is a single fabric pattern. The romper has a lace-edged bib front with the curved Cabbage patch Kid logo on it. It also has two rows of lace running across the backside and acting as ruffles. The straps close with velcro. The hat is made of white terry cloth and has ribbon ties to hold it on. The outfit came with regular lace-up shoes.

> Fun Fact: This outfit is one of the most commonly replicated CPK outfits. Consequently, you can find it in a variety of colours and patterns that Coleco never intended. They can also come with different styles of patches on the front.
