BSeries Preemie Outfit #B504 – Bubble romper and blouse

This outfit is one of the finest among this series but it can be confusing to match the pieces.

Main title graphic with a picture of the outfit on it, in purple with hearts. The text is black and says "B Series Preemie Outfit, B504 - Bubble Romper and Blouse". The background is light blue.

B Series Preemie Outfits Summary

Description

This outfit consists of three pieces. The first is the cotton bubble romper with overall type top half. The overall bib has three horizontal ribbons running across the bottom and a bow on the right side. An arched Cabbage Patch Kid patch is on the right side of the bib as well. The second is a blouse with a single large ruffle at the shoulder. Finally, the bonnet matches the pattern/colour of the bottom of the bubble romper and is edged with lace.

Many of them are patterned and coloured in various shades of purple, making it difficult to make sure they actually go together.

Footwear: Regular white shoes and socks

This outfit was sold only on dolls manufactured in 1985 and later.

Variations

> 1984 series preemie outfit #9, Bubble bottomed romper (one piece)

> 700 – Series Mimic Preemie Outfit: This outfit is structurally the same but did not come with a bonnet and has no ribbon decoration. Instead, it comes with the arched CPK logo centred on the overall bib. In addition, the blouse is a solid colour with no shoulder ruffle.

Picture of a diamond gingham version of the romper with a plain white blouse underneath. The pattern is in light purple.

Note: I do not have the code for this outfit verified. If you have it, I would very interested in pictures!

> Outfit 135: This is a one-piece outfit that LOOKS like it is two pieces. There are no ribbon accents and no arched patch, only a small square CPK patch indicative of the later outfits. It comes in many different patterns and colours.

This outfit looks to be two pieces but is one piece. The bottom, shoulder ruffles, straps and neck are dark red, the bib is a vibrant blue and the 'blouse' sleeves and chest area are white with a pattern fo red, blue and green objects.

BSeries Preemie Outfit B503 – Fancy gown with hooded blanket (that ties)

Very similar to preemie outfit #3, this one is fancier and much harder to find!

PTP: Bountiful Blue (windbreakers)

Do you have a kid wearing a blue windbreaker outfit? Wouldn’t be surprised if the answer was YES! There are so many of them . . . so how do yo know that you’ve got yours paired correctly? Find out!

The #10 Windbreaker Outfit, from the original 1983 series, has been one of the hardest to get concrete information on for various reasons:

  1. The outfit is easily mixed up. If it is not MIB or the owner can confirm they took the kid out of the box and never redressed the kid, I can’t be positive that it all came together.
  2. The shirt (the tagged piece of the outfit) is often the same colours across different outfits! For example, numerous shirts are ‘blue and white striped’, but they are actually from different outfits.
  3. Factory variation means that I think there are more outfits with a certain colour of jacket than there really are.

Finally,
4. Numerous outfits have similarly coloured jackets! Actually, that isn’t the case. I only have one colour recorded, other than blue, that is used for more than one outfit, pink (baby pink and deep rose). However, blue is enough of a problem!

Blue windbreakers are a pain

It has taken a while, but I have identified three different outfits that have blue windbreakers AND most also have blue and white striped shirts. The ONLY differences are in the shade of blue!

Without having the jackets beside each other, the colour differences are hard to see. At least the ‘blue and white striped shirts are tagged so that if you know the outfit code, you can find the right jacket!

However, that might not hold completely true. I only have one example of each outfit, and for G and H, I have only IJ (Korean factory) versions that came packaged. I do not have Primary Factory versions recorded, so there could be additional variations in jacket colour by factory.

The striped shirts don’t help

The blue and white striped shirts do not help matters much! Not only do two of the three outfits have a blue and white shirt, so do at least THREE other outfits!

10A has a blue and white striped shirt with a RED jacket.

10T (PMI) has a blue and white striped shirt, but I do not know the colour of the jacket (could be another blue one).

#100 – This mimic outfit has a blue and white stripe shirt and red jacket; however, there are visible differences.

BSeries Preemie Outfit #B502- Fancy Hooded Gown

A hood to keep your little one warm, and more lace then ever before!

Main graphic that has a pink background and black text that says "B Series Preemie Outfit B502 - Fancy Hooded Gown". It also has a picture of a blue version of the outfit.

B Series Preemie Outfits Summary

Description

Bunting bag with attached hood. The hood is one colour/pattern, and the remainder of the outfit is another. There is lace around the armholes, the hood, and the edges of the yoke. There are also three large rows of lace around the bottom of the bag. The hood opens at the back to allow it to be put on the doll. It ties closed with a white ribbon.

Almost all of them have a curved ‘Cabbage Patch Kids’ patch on the breast. Right now my THEORY is that only the OK factory didn’t use the patch.

What’s with the code?

I am unsure what the B stands for. I theorize it indicates that this was the second series of outfits, but I have no proof of that. These outfits have a 500s number as they were produced in 1985. For more information on this, jump to: What are Clothing Tag Codes

Some of the codes were put on the tags with stickers. It may be they were reusing leftover tags from other outfits until the correct tags were available.

The Outfits

NOTE: These outfits do not have conventionally agreed-upon names. Therefore, the names used below were created by me purely for the sake of expediency to distinguish one from the other.

There are six B Series outfits, and they were made predominately by the SS factory. However, some are OK, and some are WS. All are Chinese factories.

I do not have enough information to propose ‘primary’ factories at this time; however, so far, outfits J and K appear to be primarily from the WS factory.  Based on my research to date, it seems that letters A, B, C, and I were not manufactured. The highest letter I’ve found is K.

Picture of a spreadsheet that shows what outfits have been recorded for a specific BSeries outfit. It is an example of what the greyed out sections look like.
Example: The greyed-out lines are those that I do not believe had outfits manufactured.

Almost all the BSeries outfits have the curved Cabbage Patch Kids applique on them. I have only seen one or two that did not !

Talking Kid Ensembles

You will find that these wonderfully chatty kids, with their beautiful dresses and demands for their cup, will easily talk their way into your heart.

Talking Cabbage Patch Kids were only produced by Coleco for approximately one year and started becoming available in September of 1987. (Ref#2, p. 86) They are quite large and came with fancy outfits, cornsilk hair, a Parent’s Guide, special birth certificates, and a ‘magic cup’.

They were a remarkable toy for their time and had many surprises in store for their new parents, including a mobile moving face, numerous hidden sensors, and the ability to respond to their new parent and other talking kids! Two or more together will often be heard singing in around. It’s amazing! (Video) There seem to be a variety of different ‘scripts’ that the kids use when speaking, but the dolls can learn new phrases and words from other talking kids they interact with. (Ref#4, Vol. 2, Iss. 5, p.3) The first 250 sold at their ‘opening event’ were signed by Xavier Roberts. (Ref#4, Vol 2, Iss. 3, p.4)

The dolls came in only two head moulds, T-8 (one dimple) and T-9 (big grin, no dimple). Coleco produced AA talking kids but no boys.

These dolls were pretty fancy, and unfortunately, may have been ahead of their time. Many considered them creepy. It got worse when the first of the Chucky movies was released in November of 1988. These kids were also plagued with poblems, such as:

  • A high purchase price.
  • They used a lot of batteries, four AA and one 9V, and went through them like candy!
  • Many didn’t work when they were purchased or stopped working soon after purchase.
  • They weren’t ‘cuddly’ like regular Cabbage Patch Kids.

Clothing Information

There are eight different talking kid outfits made by the OK factory, numbers #695 – 702. I believe there are six versions of each outfit, letters A – F; however, they used eight different colours of velveteen fabric overall. (Aqua, Burgundy, Grey, Medium Blue, Navy Blue, Pink, Purple, Red)

Four of the outfits consist of white cotton dresses with a velveteen pinafore and matching cotton bloomers.

The other four have a velveteen dress and a cotton or taffeta pinafore. The outfits with cotton pinafores come with plain white bloomers, and the outfits with a taffeta pinafore come with taffeta bloomers.

Spreadsheet graphic that lays out which part of each outfit is velveteen, what the cotton dresses look like, and a description for each of the outfits.

The lace used on the bloomers, dress, and pinafore always match. All of them come with solid white tights and odd white or black faux leather shoes. The black shoes seem to come most frequently with the navy blue, burgundy, and red outfits.

There are hints that some talkers may have come with regular lace-up shoes instead of the ‘talker shoes’. I have no proof at this point.

Although these outfits originally came only on Talking Kids, a few can be found on ‘regular’ kids from 1988 and 1989. They likely did this to clear out leftover outfits. However, it is not something you’ll see often.
